Oh Girls.... You just REALLY Don't Even Know!!!

There are not even words to express my frustration, blood pressure elevation, or disappointment!! Since I have given EVERY extra spare minute I have had to my calling/church responsibilities, my new "job/responsibilities" at work (Lead Charge Nurse), my kids/household responsibilities and my "mama dance class practice" (recital in 6 weeks and I didn't want to be the one messing up the performance:), and the school play (over ticket sales etc the last 2 weeks), I was just planning on catching up the blog at our girls/sisters weekend in 3 weeks! I was going to start from Christmas and go through our BFF's coming to visit from California...all of our snow picture/photo shoot with them...right down to our February trip to Disneyland, Sea World, The Wax Museum, San Diego Wild Life Park--everything! But you guessed it! Our computer crashed (less than a year old) and when we sent it off to retrieve the data, apparently the hard drive was toast and they were "unable to retrieve anything!" We have not been the most consistent with our "back-ups" and we are SICK! We lost everything and all of those photo memories! I wish you could have seen the one of Christian sitting in the Sea World Bleachers "Soak Zone" all by himself...and then the after picture of him soaked! It was so cute and I am beyond ill that all of those memories will have to live in our minds! We had tons of pictures with the pilot on our flight giving our kids a personal tour of the cock-pit and letting them sit in the pilot/co-pilot's seats etc. We spent hours taking photos with characters at Disneyland for our "character book." We had so much fun feeding nectar to the Lorakeets at the San Diego wild life park out of little cups. We had up close pictures of the cheetah walking right past us and memories of them telling us to keep our little ones right by us so they wouldn't be a snack for the pacing cheetah. The memories of our hotel and the pool to ourselves every night for a week will also never show on pictures! The tour of Hollywood in our open air tour bus and all of the fun insider info to share! Ahhh! All of the YW activities that we have worked so hard on: The Brand New Year activity where Steve and I cooked dinner for 100, and all of the youth pictured with their "escort" (a YM) for the etiquette dinner- plus many others! It is kind of like death in a way...we can't take any of the hard copy pictures with us, everything that goes with you is in your mind, thoughts, memories, knowledge you have gained and relationships you have made with others! That is the only comforting thought in all of this is that we have that! I am so mad right now though, that you can bet there will be an abrupt change in my priorities where things I need to have happen will definitely be moved to #1 & 2 on the To-Do list! Note to all: Back up your computer and keep up your blog:)!

Store your pictures on-line! I recommend picasa, but there are lots of other free places as well.

Oh shoot you guys. I'm so sorry that happened. Ryan and I have been talking a lot about this very issue. I have a lot of my pictures in books, etc. But, I still want the original digital file to be kept safe.

We have external hard drives (small unit about 3" x 6") that backup our personal computers and contain all of our documents, files, and pictures. In an emergency, we can just grab the little drive and go.

However, we have been talking about backing up our back up drive every 3 months or so and then storing that in a fireproof safe or something.

You are right though. It is like death and you can't take stuff with you, but for us photog addicted people (like our fam), losing pictures is TRAGIC.

I'm so sorry that happened.

That just flat out sucks! That happened to us about 5 yrs ago so we have also bought the external hard drive. I know the anger you are feeling though. We lost about six months of pictures. Soooo sorry!

That is so sad Annalee! I know it doesn't help much, but at least you have the "cock pit" pics on Mikelle's blog... :)

Thanks everyone for the sympathies! We have the darn external hard drive--just need to use it more:). I'll have to look into Picassa though...thanks for all the advice! It won't happen again as I will see to it! We thought about booking the trip again-but once was enough for now! We got more than our fill of Southern California--might need to try somewhere new! One day our pedometer was at 14 miles:)(We felt like we crossed the plains somedays-we walked so much:)

Such a bummer! I can't even believe that! Nothing can replace those wonderful memories! I can kind-of relate, when I went to China with my dad, My camera broke on the way home through the flight. Total bummer!
